Play In A Day™- An Interactive Theatre Field Trip for Schools
Learn. Create. Rehearse. Perform. Celebrate.
What if your next school field trip didn't just take students to see a performance—but gave them the opportunity to create one?
Play In A Day™ is an interactive theatre field trip from Pavilion Plays in Clayton, NC, where students learn theatre and improvisation, work in production teams, create their own short plays, rehearse, and perform for one another—all in a single field trip.
Designed for elementary, middle, and high school students, Play In A Day™ is adapted to the age, experience level, and goals of each group.

WHAT IS PLAY IN A DAY™?
Play In A Day™ is a hands-on school theatre field trip that combines theatre, improvisation, storytelling, communication, creativity, and teamwork.
Students begin with an interactive theatre workshop led by Pavilion Plays instructors. Then they break into smaller production teams and use the skills they've learned to create a short original performance.
They brainstorm.
They create characters.
They build a story.
They rehearse.
They solve problems.
And then...
THEY TAKE THE STAGE.
Each group performs its creation for the other students, turning the field trip into a mini theatre festival.
No previous theatre experience is required.
FOR ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Play In A Day™ isn't a one-size-fits-all program.
We adjust the experience based on the age, experience, group size, and goals of your students.
🎈 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Younger students focus on:
Imagination
Storytelling
Character creation
Cooperation
Listening
Confidence
Theatre games
Basic performance skills
The experience is energetic, playful, and highly structured while still giving students room to make their own creative choices.
🎭 MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle school students can take the experience further with:
Improvisation
Character development
Script creation
Scene structure
Ensemble work
Leadership
Blocking and staging
Public speaking
Creative problem-solving
Students aren't simply following directions—they're making artistic decisions together.
🎬 HIGH SCHOOL
For high school groups, Play In A Day™ can be shaped around your curriculum—not just a theatre class.
Theatre students can dive deeper into the creative process through:
Advanced improvisation
Devising and ensemble creation
Playwriting and dialogue
Directing and staging
Character development
Performance technique
Production and design
Leadership and collaboration
But Play In A Day™ can also become a hands-on learning experience for English, history, social studies, and other subjects.
Imagine students:
Bringing a historical event to life through an original scene
Dramatizing a moment from a novel, short story, or play
Exploring a character's perspective through performance
Adapting literature for the stage
Creating scenes around a historical period or cultural movement
Using storytelling to demonstrate understanding of a text, concept, or unit
Collaborating to research, write, create, and present
The result is more than a field trip. Students are using what they know to create something, giving teachers another way to reinforce curriculum while building communication, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and presentation skills.
A FIELD TRIP WHERE EVERY STUDENT HAS A ROLE
Not every student wants to be the lead actor—and that's exactly why Play In A Day works.
Students can discover their strengths in a variety of roles:
🎭 Actors — Bring characters to life
✏️ Storytellers & Playwrights — Create the story and dialogue
🎬 Directors — Organize scenes and blocking
🎨 Designers — Imagine costumes, props, and sets
🔊 Sound & Effects Creators — Add theatrical magic
💡 Production Leaders — Help make the performance happen
Different roles. Same stage. Every student contributes.
Bring us your learning objective. We'll help turn it into a Play In A Day™.
FROM IDEA TO PERFORMANCE IN ONE MORNING
Our Play In A Day™ experience follows a simple process:
1. LEARN
Students participate in an energetic theatre and improv workshop and learn the tools they'll use to create their plays.
2. CREATE
Students form production teams and develop characters, stories, scenes, and theatrical ideas.
3. REHEARSE
Teams turn their ideas into a short performance through rehearsal, blocking, problem-solving, and teamwork.
4. PERFORM
Each group takes the stage and performs its original creation for the other students.
5. CELEBRATE
We finish by celebrating the creativity, courage, teamwork, and accomplishments of every group.
